Wife. Mother. Gardener. Academic. Artist. Craftsperson. Handy(wo)man. Blonde. Seeker of Happiness. A regular Hodgepodge of life and skills.
I grew up in Central New Jersey. Ok, more North Central but still. I liked dinosaurs, and bugs, and math, and art, and marching band. I went to college in RI (Go Rhody!) and graduated with a BS in Zoology. Moved to AZ for a few years then back to the east coast to be with my now husband in Philly. After some years working in a lab at UPenn, I realized that my life path was not what I had originally thought it would be. So, I went to college... again. This time for Illustration at the University of the Arts. Many of my instructors didn't know what to do with me... I was older, established as an adult, and not interested in the usual subject matter, but excited. I was doing this for me.
We got married. I graduated. The economy tanked. Any hope of pursuing my new found love of life tanked with it. I stayed at Upenn for several more years. Ugh.
Then our daughter was born, and I found a new reason for being. The pregnancy was horrid. Hyperemesis gravidarum is something that you NEVER want to experience nor watch someone you know experience. Princess Kate makes it look easy. Amy Schumer made it real.
When our daughter was about 18 months old I signed on with Paint Nite. Not high art by any means of the imagination but it got me excited again. I played with paint. I helped folks mix color and make pictures. I acquired a staff (who I miss dearly) and did well for a few years. But I knew there was a time limit on this endeavor so I was constantly thinking forward.
Thinking, but with little ability to act because my husband got sick. Like REALLY sick. ICU for 3 months sick. Idiopathic Viral Myocarditis with Cardiomyopathy. That's the medical terminology for "he almost died on me 4 times after contracting a series of viruses that attacked his heart". 2015 was a very rough year for us. BUT thanks to some extremely fantastic doctors and nurses at The University of Pennsylvania's Presbyterian Hospital, and the unbelievable support of family and friends, he not only survived, he thrived. Five years later, and though he is never going back to work, our family is intact. We are so incredibly thankful for that. But, understandably, everything got put on hold for a long while as the whole family recovered from that.
With our future in mind, we moved to a new house, and new school district, and space for a studio for me. New, and full of promise.
And so I started working my butt off. Wood working, cyanotype, digital work, traditional painting, etc. Skill wise, I am definitely a jack-of-all-trades and I’m constantly picking up more depending on what my needs are for a particular project. You will see definitely see my work change and morph.
So keep an eye on me, because new things will be popping up as time goes on. The ideas are endless...
